Paul: 4yrs old

if John is 8 and Paul is 4 then 2 yrs ago they would be 6 yrs old and 2yrs old respectively.

currently Paul is x

John is 2x

2yrs ago Paul is x-2

john is 2x-2

so

3(x-2)=2x-2

3x-6=2x-2

3x-2x=-2+6

x=4
